pheww!!!! …. thats a long heading . but it conveys just what i want it to.

i host my own email on google apps but wanted to move to windows live mail for quite some time. gmail interface is too slow and unpredictable for my needs. u must be wondering why would i want to move to hotmail. well, the fact is that hotmail works the best with outlook and I havent found any other mail which is better than it for syncing with outllok.

anyways, there are multiple ways of doing this. if you want to transfer mails from gmail to hotmail, then you can simply go to http://www.trueswitch.com/winlive. enter the details and you are done.

however, if you are like me and are using google apps for your mail. then it isnt that simple. one way is to use the pop fetch capability in hotmail. however, it is a tedious way and requires a lot of work from your side.

the method that i describe below works for any pop/imap enabled mail. what it means is that you can transfer mail from any imap/pop enabled mail service to hotmail using this method.

with me so far? great! …. the method is simple.

install windows live mail desktop client. setup the two email accounts (account from which you want to move, and account to which you want to move to) in windows live mail. then download all the mails from your old email account to windows live mail. then select all the mails that have to be moved and drag them to the appropriate folder in hotmail.

well, thats it. downloading takes time. uploading takes time too. but you get a lot of flexibility to arrange which folders need to be updated or copied etc.

Vote to improve Outlook IMAP support.

This is no suggestion or tutorial; however, it holds much importance for me and many others. If you too use Outlook a lot and love using mail with imap; but are being forced to use some other email client because outlook imap support sucks, then please vote for it here. This is a website run by microsoft employees. Maybe they will hear now.

Block Ads in Internet Explorer 8 without changing hosts file or using third party Add-Ons!

There are a number of ways to block advertisements in Internet Explorers, however, most involve adding a new process or ActiveX extension to IE. I do not like increasing my memory footprint for everything that I would like to do on my system and this trick has been like god send for me. Read it on the internet somewhere, don’t particularly remember where, but this trick turns your IE 8 into a mighty good ad-blocker by itself without the need for any third party software. Just a note, this is a learning ad-blocker. The more you use it, the better it will get. Rest assured, it wouldn’t take it a month to learn. You will start noticing the difference in 2 days max!….

1. Open regedit.exe ( press windows key+r and then type regedit.exe )

2. Go to the following location (If you dont find this path, then create it yourself):

3. Create a new DWORD value and name it “StartMode”.

4. Double click the value you just created in step 3 and change it’s value to 1.

5. Now open Internet Explorer 8. You should see a small icon-> in the status bar on the bottom. What you have basically done is that you have enabled InPrivate Filter and changed the default settings to ON.

6. Now click on the drop down arrow, which will open this menu->

7. From there, choose settings which will bring you to the following dialog.

8. Change the default number of websites to 3 and click OK.

That’s it!!…. you are done …. you will notice, that with time, Internet Explorer will block most of the ads that you see on websites…. The above settings have made sure that any server that is displaying ads on minimum 3 websites will be blocked on IE.

Enable root user login in ubuntu linux

Canonical thought it to be best to prevent user from logging in as root completely. Though it has certain advantages of not letting users modifying critical settings and crashing their systems, but home users quickly turn into power users and then they need root user for many tasks. Enabling root user login is however really easy.

Follow the steps below to quickly enable the root user login.

Step 1: Setup a root user password from any user account->

Unlock this screen using user password.

Open root user properties:

Step 2: modify the login window so that it can accept the root user.

Reliance netconnect broadband+ internet on Linux (Jaunty Jackalope ubuntu 9.04)

So you too are stuck with a working laptop with an awesome reliance broadband 3G ZTE AC 8710 modem and a gut feeling that it will work with Linux someday….?? … well, you are right, it does work and you are right, it isn’t really a tough thing to do.

I bought my usb 3g ZTE modem from reliance 4 days back and since then had been trying to make it work without success. There are so many tutorials on the net that describe how to set it up and almost all are correct, but as you will soon notice, none of them had enough knowledge for a newbie like me to set it up completely from scratch. So, after trying for many days and giving up every night and then again trying the next day, I was finally able to set it up. However, after living in immortal fear of forgetting my newfound knowledge or my laptop catching electrophobia, I decided to immortalize it by writing it down…. I do want to stress that I write English all day long but it is limited to just a few words like while, for, switch etc …. so it is refreshing to write something else! …. I can finally understand the power of a spellchecker!

I hope that this small tutorial helps some of you…. I have tried to provide you with clear details of how to make it work step by step.

Step 1: Make sure you have root login enabled. To see a step by step guide, << click here >>

Step 2: login as root.

Step 3: Find the product and vendor id of your device. To do this, first open a terminal window and then type this lsusb . Keep a note of the contents. The output will be somewhat like this

Now plug-in your usb reliance netconnect modem and then after about 10 seconds (this is to give enough time for your device to initialize) run lsusb again. Note the output again. This time the output should look something like:

Note the difference in the previous two outputs. This line tells you that the vendor id and the product id. You will have different Ids. 19d2 is the vendor id and fff1 is the product id.

Step 4: The information collected about has to be entered into a special file now. You will have to edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst.
This file contains kernel options that may be needed while booting your Linux. Take a backup of this file somewhere before editing it.

Now prefix 0x (that’s a zero followed by small X and not o . You might have to type this as copying it from here doesn’t seem to work. ) to both and vendor id and product id and create the following string:

“usbserial.vendor=0x19d2 usbserial.product=0xfff1″

This string now has to be added at the end of your default kernel options. If you are like me, then you wouldn’t know what a default kernel option is. Well, nothing but a few words I would say. In fact, the string that you have created is also going to become a default kernel option.

Add this line at the end of default options in your menu.1st
file. Search this file and find out the text that looks like the text below:
